With headquarters in Washington, DC, USAID, as the U.S. government's Agency for International Development, has been implementing America's foreign economic and humanitarian assistance programs since 1961. Since 1992, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission to Ukraine, Moldova, and Belarus, has been working to assist the region in its transition to a broad-based, market-oriented democracy. While each of these countries' developmental challenges are unique, the Mission's programs are broadly focused on the areas of democracy and governance, economic growth, and social assistance. USAID's principal mission in Ukraine is to assist the transition to a pluralistic democracy and market-oriented economy. USAID also supports efforts to alleviate the burdens imposed on the most vulnerable members of society. USAID/Kyiv Mission programs and activities have led to tangible results in such areas of economic restructuring, as Financial Sector Reform, Banking Supervision and Budget Reform, Legal Reform, Agriculture, Environment and Small Business Development. USAID programs and activities have focused on reinforcing pluralism and transparency in the political process, implementing the rule of law, strengthening civil society and NGOs, assisting in local government development, and supporting independent media. USAID's support for health and social sector restructuring in Ukraine is designed to to increase the quality of social services and protect the most vulnerable members of society during the economic transition. Activities range from building viable frameworks for pension and employment insurance and consolidating revenue collection for more sustainable social services to assisting the management capacity of local organizations to deliver social assistance. USAID works in close partnership with private U.S. based voluntary organizations, indigenous institutions, U.S. businesses, and other national and international agencies.
